Description
Malacologia Mediterranea
by T. Cossignani, R. Ardovani, et al
ISBN 9788886070263, published in 2011 by L'Informatore Piceno, Ancona, Italy, hardcover about 8 by 11.5 inches, 20 by 29.5 cm., 536 pages, includes text and more than 440 full page-size color photographic plates of mollusks across all Classes, in all the book includes color photos of 7500 specimens. The book's text is bilingual in English and in Italian.
"Malacologia Mediterranea" is a book of great importance because of its' extensive coverage it includes about the mollusks found in the Mediterranean Sea. All of the specimens are shown in sharply detailed color photographs as well as some shown in drawings from earlier works. In most cases, several views of the shells are shown, showing variations within a species as well. The keys beneath the photos contain only basic information, the scientific name, and the size and locality. There are general descriptions and notes of each of the Families in front of the sections showing the photos of the species within the section. After the introduction, there is complete, almost 50 page list of the systematics. The index is organized by the species name of each of the shells whose photos appear in the book and includes the names of the Families and the Genera within the index. The book's index includes approximately 2600 listings. The book is not well known in the USA but it is a book that is of major importance for the study of Mediterranean mollusks.
