Van Nostrand, Princeton, DE., printing limited to 2000 copies, hardcover in red cloth binding with gold stamped title, page size is 23 by 29 cm., or about 8.75 by 11.5 inches, accurate color reproductions of the 48 plates in Swainson's book that were originally hand painted over lithographs, also reproductions of text and descriptions that were part of the book.
Over the years there have been numerous reproductions of many of the antique shell books that range in quality from quite good to the very poor "print-on-demand" books that you can find today. This reproduction of Swainson's "Exotic Conchology" stands out among the books of this type for its quality and faithfulness to the original work. The book was produced as a limited production work (2000 copies) as the first of a series proposed by Abbott for the Delaware Museum of Natural History to enable collectors to have access to the rare classical works on Conchology. The project unfortunately was not successful and this is the first and the only book that was ever done. The books were costly at the time that they were produced and did not sell well which is the reason that the project was cancelled. Today these books have become are in themselves collector's items. As well as the reproductions of the text and plates this book contains a biography of Swainson and a modern update by Abbott for the names used for the shells by Swainson. This is a used copy which looks like it is new with the exception of a bump on the upper corners of the cover.
