Fauna Malesiana - The Guide to the Land Snails of Bali
by
J.J. Vermeulen & A.J. Whitten
ISBN 90-73348-84-6, published in 1998 by Backhuys Publishers, Leiden, The Netherlands, hardcover with laminated boards, 164 pages about 16.5 by 24 cm (6.75 by 9 inches), species are illustrated by high quality black and white drawings
This book gives us an excellent reference for the ecology of the terrestrial molluscs found on Bali and on the nearby small island , Nusa Penida, of Indonesia. The senior author is a taxonomist who has published extensively on the land shells of Western Indonesia and the junior author is a biodiversity researcher that has authored handbooks on the ecology of several of the major Indonesian Islands . The introductory chapters give us an extensive view of the ecology of Bali and a saddening look at the loss of forestation that is the habitat for many of the species snails found there. The second part gives us very high quality drawings that are large and detailed of the species found here. Lastly there is an extensive checklist along with taxonomic information about these molluscs., without taxonomic revision. The authors include the family,
Ellobiidae
in their study. This is another example of an important book that has received almost no circultaion in the USA. It is now out of print. These are new copies of the book from the publisher's original stock.
