| World Atlas of Coral Reefs by M.D. Spalding, C. Ravilious,& E.P.Green
2001, University of California Press, black cloth hardcover with printed dust jacket, 424 pages, about 8¼ by 11¾ inches (21by 30cm) color illustrations, photographs and maps
First let me tell you what this book is not; it is not an identification guide to corals. What it is though is a thorough discussion of coral reef formation and the vital role that they play in the worlds ecology. It is an amazing book. It maps and shows the location of each of the worlds' coral reefs, discusses the condition of these reefs and shows us photographs taken on these reefs. It is a book that should be of interest to almost every shell collector since these reefs play a vital role in the lives of so many of those shells that we collect. It is also of great importance to know about them since many of the reefs in the world today are in severe trouble and many are dying. I for one am keeping a copy close to my desk I think that it will be a great way to "see"what the data really looks like on many of the shells that I receive. This is a used copy in almost new condition. There is a small tear at the lower edge of the back of the dust jacket and the jacket is now covered in a clear plastic cover to protect it. |
