This is a book that
is a very important reference work for shell collectors interested in
the Caribbean molluscan fauna. It is a compilation of four expeditions
of deep sea dredging undertaken by the Rosensteil School of Marine and
Amospheric Science of the University of Miami in the late 1960's and
early 70's. Prior to these trips many of the shells that they
collected were seldom seen. Today many of these shells have become
available to collectors but many still remain very elusive rarities.
You will find many species of shells and many molluscan
families are represented including, Conus, Cypraea, Turridae,
Cassidae, Columbariidae, etc. The first section deals with
Cephalopods in the Gulf of Panama which reports 26 species 11 of which
are reported for the first time. Part two is "Mollusks from
the Gulf of Panama" which records 41 species of which 15 are
newly described and figured. Part 3 is "Conidae of the Pilsbry
Expedition to the Gulf of Panama" in which almost 450 specimens
belonging to 11 species are studied and discussed. And the final
section "New and Unusual Mollusks" presents us with 59 species of
shells that are rare and unusual. Except for a handful of
them the shells in this final section are as rare today as they are
when they were first found on this expedition. Almost as new condition, rubber stamp on fly leaf and corners very slightly worn.
