By Kohman Y. Arakawa
ISBN 0915826070, published in 1979 by Biological Society of Nagasaki Pref., Japan, hardcover in boards with printed dust jacket, , 15 by 21.5 cm size (about 6 by 8.5 inches), 234 pages, illustrated with 14 full page colored plates and numerous black and white reproductions of stamps and drawings
There is an interesting difference in how the subject matter is presented in this book and the very similar book, “Shells on Postage Stamps of the World” that was published in about a year after this book appeared. Both of these books are also quite different than the 2014 book “Shells on Stamps”. This book was published by a Japanese Biological society and has a great deal of emphasis on the shells. While the 1980 book was published by a Philatelic society in the USA and places greater emphasis on the stamps and related postal items. This book contains listings for more than 1500 shell stamps that were issued by 144 countries from 1840 up to 1979. It is hard to choose between the three books now available to us and all of them should be in the library of anyone who is seriously interested in the crossover hobbies of shell and stamp collecting. Even if you are not particularly interested in collecting shells and shells on stamps these books are nice browsing material to show the real and sometimes fantastic ideas about shells that are seen on stamps.
This book is a used , ex-library copy that is in nice condition. Apart from some shelf wear to the edges of the dust jacket and a small bump on the top edge of the front cover, it might pass as new. It is a bilingual publication in Japanese and English.
