Those of you who
know Dr. Thach have already been exposed to his boundless enthusiasm
for the shells of his native land. Almost single handedly he has
introduced many of us to these shells which represent a large and
varied number of species. With this book we now can have
access to the knowledge that Dr. Thatch has gathered in his many years
as a collector, dealer and shell enthusiast. This book was a
long time in the making and I have seen some of the earliest plans that
Dr. Thatch made for this book. The finished product by far exceeds
these plans and from what began as a simple check list has grown to
become a major reference work on the molluscan fauna of this region.
The author has always had a passion for malformed shells and
many of the extreme examples that he has collected and seen over the
years have made there way into this book. When seen alongside
of their normal counterparts you will be amazed that some of these
examples were able to survive. The plates in this book are
bound following the text. Each plate is keyed at
the bottom of each plate to make it easy to do a quick visual
identifications of shells. This book can take its place on the shelf
along with the other very good reference works on mollusks from Asia
that have been published in the last few years.. |
