by E. Alison Kay & Olive Schoenberg-Dole 1991, University of Hawaii Press, cardboard covers, 89 pages including 141 color photos, 5 by 8.5 inches (21.5 by 12.5 cm)
Although this paperback has been around for many years it deserves a lot more attention than usually is given to it. A lot of information is packed into this little book and it is not another one of those tourist guides to shells that you find on the beach of "you name the place". The book covers a wide variety of marine mollusks from shallow water and some more uncommon shells from deep water. It also has a small section on the unique land shells that are found in the Hawiian Islands. In all over three hundred species are represented, many of them endemic to these islands. Be sure to read the excellent introductary pages that proceed the illustrations of the species. |
