Recent and Fossil
Shells of Indonesia
By Bunjamin Dharma
2005 , ConchBooks,
Germany, 424 pages include 110 full sizecolor photo plates & 40
black &
white page size plates , laminated board covers ndj, stitched binding,
page
size is approximately 7.5 by 10.25 inches (19 by 26 cm)
This book covers 1982
species in the recent fauna, including both marine and terrestrial
species.
These shells are classified in 171 families in over 530 genera. These
shells
are illustrated on 110 color plates. There are an additional 723 fossil
shells
belonging to 113 families illustrated on 40
black and white plates. This book is a
major publication and it is the first comprehensive book that I know of
that
covers the shells of this large archipelago. The book is essentially a
photographic identification guide to these shells with some brief but
well
written introductory material before the sections on the recent and the
fossil
material included in this work. It is a joy to use with the layout
being
illustrations on the right hand page and brief information about the
shells on
the left hand page (name, size and locality in Indonesia).
I consider this among
the most important and best works covering the shells of the south
central Molluscan
fauna published to date.
