This very beautiful book is an identification key to the 66 species of Unios (Mollosca, Unionidae) living and also extinct in the waters of Pennsylvania. There are also a few pages devoted to some of the other fresh water bivlaves also found in Pennsylvania, but the mussels are the heart and sole of this book. It is sad to see that a dozen or more of these shells are now considered to be extinct in the region in which they once were found and it is sadder yet to note that the author categorizes the greater number of these species with threaten or imperiled status. Clearly this is a book that should be in the library of anyone interested in these shells. It is beautifully illustrated with drawings by the author of not only the shells but also the biological hosts that are necessary for their life-cycle.
