Description
Offshore Shells of Southern Africa
A pictorial guide to more than 750 Gastropods
by D.G. Steyn & M. Lussi
2005, published in Durban, South Africa, paperback, 289 pages, color plates through out, page size 5.75 by 8.25 inches

This book is a companion to the earlier"Marine Shells of South Africa" by the same authors. This book concerns itself with the sub- tidal and off shore shells while their first book deals with the more familiar inshore and inter-tidal species. Of the two books, this one will be the one that is of greater interest to collectors. Many of the species illustrated here are difficult to find in other shell reference works. In all there are 750 gastropod species, subspecies and forms to be found in this book. The layout of this book makes it easy to use. There are three species per page and the text and photographs appear next to one another. The text is minimal but does provide adequate information about the shells and the pictures provide most of the needed information. Dorsal and ventral views of each of the shells are given.
