2010, Paleontological Research Institute, Ithaca, NY, paper covers , perfect (glue) binding, 550 pages, about 21.5 by 28 cm (8½ by 11 inches), 79 black & white full page photographic plates, also charts, maps and tables
This scholarly publication will be of interest to collectors of the Tonnoidean gastropods in the families Tonnidae, Ranellidae, Ficidae, Cassidae, & Personidae found in the Domiincan Republic with a few extending into Southern Florida and into the Northern part of South America. It is a survey of species found during the Miocene and into the Neogene time frames and some extending into the Recent fauna. The black and white plates are in sharp detail and there is an excellent introduction by Beu to the subjects of this study. It is an encouraging trend to see more publications on molluscs now tracing the shells from their ancestral forms into the recent fauna. It helps expand our thinking and gives us the realization that what we see today is in a constant state of evolution and helps greatly understand that the shells that we are familiar with today may not be the ones that populate our waters tomorrow. |
