Description
Multiform Australian Volutes
by
Frank Abbottsmith
1969 original edition published in Australia, paper covers, clip,109 pages page size is 8.5 by 13¼ inches(21.5 by 33.5 cm), illustrated throughout with black & white line drawings,
This privately printed work is one of the more interesting works and rarest works on the Australian volutes that has ever been published. As it was published by the author it consisted of 109single sided pages . Several pages containing new information were added to it for this printing. The book is illustrated throughout with the often strangely exaggerated drawings of the shells by the author. Abbottsmith was a collector who was obviously in love about his chosen field of study. He was able to retire from his work while relatively young. And he was able to spend the rest of his life studying, collecting and compiling information about the
Volutidae
found in the waters off Australia. In the "good old days", before it was thought necessary to give a new name to every shell that varied in some respect to others of its kind, Abbottsmith pointed out these differences and illustrated them in this book. Many of his drawings are exagerated, but he is able to make use of these exagerations to show just how different the same species of shell can be. Many of the shells similar to what has been depicted here have turned up in subsequent works as "new species". When this book first appeared Abbottsmith was considered by many to be an eccentric (and there is no denying that he was). We were in the same orbit probably in the early seventies and I got to spend a lot of time with him as he traveled around the USA giving a talk on his favorite topic to shell clubs and shell meetings across the country. If my memory is correct he was at the COA in Seattle which was the third meeting of that organization. As the years have passed I now have a great deal more respect for him and greater appreciation of his work than I ever before. This book has some severe damp stains on the fron and back covers , these stains have penetrated the first 4 pages of the text but do not interfere with the text in any way. As you can see the front cover is a bit ragged but this is a very rare title and I am pleased to have a copy in any condition to offer. Several blank pages are included after the text is completed and presumably this is for your own notes.
