This interesting, and wildly variable group of Australian endemic Cypraea are treated as 5 distinct groups by the author. Each group then divided into several species,sub-species and forms often yielding very unwieldy taxonomic results. This book is a very interesting contrast to "Australia's Spectacular Cowries" which take a very different view of the systematic of this very complex group of shells. I think that the nomenclature for this widely studied and widely collected shells is going to remain a point of argument for a long while to come. DNA studies point to differences in a great number of these shells that appear largely the same from a conchological point of view. This is our last new copy of this book. It is now out of print and it will not be an easy book to find in the used book market. |
