This is simply put is a beautiful "coffee table book" that contains beautiful over sized color photographs of about 75 mollusks in their natural habitat. Many of these photos are the first ever taken of several of these shells. Most of us never have a chance to see just how beautiful the soft tissue parts of the shells that we collect are. I think you will find it seeing these living animals through Rawling's eyes and through the lens of his camera a rewarding experience. The book is large and the photographs fill the pages, often shown across two pages for large size close-ups that reveal all the details, colors and patterns of the shell that are illustrated. There is a brief but very informative description of each section of the book. This book makes a great gift for any shell collecting friends on your list and it is a wonderful gift that you can give to yourself as well. Usually coffee table shell books are to a great or lesser degree the "same old, same old", but this book is in a category all its own.
