Landsnails of Taiwan
by Hsieh Bo-Chuan, Wu Shu-Ping, & Tsai, Chi-Li

ISBN 978-986-04-0303-9, published in  Dec. 2013 by Forestry Bureau Council of Agriculture, Taipei, Taiwan, in laminated paper covers, about 14 by 21 cm. or 5½ by 8¼ inches, 381 pages, illustrated through out the book with very sharp color photos of living and cabinet specimens, there are also illustrations drawn in black and white, text is in simplified Chinese but standard scientific names are used for the shells.

This is the third edition of this book and it is a major reference work for more than 325 species included in 36 families of these mollusks. The book is of very high quality print and identifications can easily be made using the photographs and the drawings. This book has an unusual layout. It is meant to be used "sideways", that is with the spine of the book at the top. It feels strange at first but you will easily get used to it. There is no index of the species in conventional scientific notation but the is in the table of contents a conventional listing of the families of these shells to narrow down the need to browse through the entire book.

The book is in Simplified (Mandarin) Chinese and that is going to be an obstacle to these books becoming general reference works in the west. Although I have a built in, in- house translator here in the form of my wife, Juying, I find that I can scan in the text from the books and run them through an online translation program and get a fairly accurate translation of the text. Of course being familiar with the terms one is used to seeing in other books helps us get back on track when the translation program takes off on a track all its own.

This book and the other shell books from China as well as being excellent quality works and they  are also very low in price. They could not be produced in the USA or anywhere else and sold for the prices that carry.  I hope that this and the other books from China that we are offering become somewhat well received. If the sales are even modestly successful we intend to bring in many other books from China and from Taiwan that we can offer to you.
