1948 publication of Univ. of Michigan Press, paper wrappers, about 6.75 by 10 inches (17.5 by 25.5 cm), 134 pages text and 14 pages b/w plates some drawn and some photos.,charts, dist. maps and other illustrations in text.

This is an excellent guide to the terrestrial and non-marine shells found in Puerto Rico about 60 years ago. I have the feeling that many of the populations of shells presented here are no longer in existence but it is an interesting look back in time when this US territory was far less developed than it is today. The shells that are studied were collected by Dr. Van der Schale in 1941 and 1942. He reports a total of 114 species of which land shells make up the bulk (about 102 species) of the material and the remainder, a dozen species, are fresh-water shells.

This is the only copy of this work that I've had and I suspect that it is not an easy book to find. It is in very fine condition but there is a half inch portion of the lower spine that is missing and there is a library stamp on the front cover and a pencil notation on the fly leaf. The body of the book and the plates are in excellent condition.
