| Giant Clams
A Comprehensive Guide to the Identification & Care of Tridacnid Clams
by Daniel Knop
1996 published by Dähne Verlag, Germany, 255 pages about 7 by 9¼ inches (17 by 24 cm.), in laminated boards, illustrated mostly in color with some b/w illustrations.
It contains a gigantic amount of information about the few species that compose this family which, of course, includes the notorious, man-eating giant clam of mythic status. Of course it is a great identification guide, but the sections on ecology, reproduction and mariculture are truly exceptional and will appeal to the marine biologist as well as to the shell collector. The sections devoted to mans' use (and misuse) of these mollusks should be required reading for everyone. Supply is becomming low now and I am not sure if it remains in print. |
