This book covers 34 families of freshwater gastropods and 9 families of freshwater bivalves. Each chapter in the book is a synthesis of the relationships, diversity, ecology, and distribution of these mollusks. There are contributions by 31 malacologists from around the world which have been edited by Charles Lydeard & Kevin S. Cummings. A color photo and map of the distribution is provided for each of the families in this study. This is a very important book because so many of the mollusks in the study are at risk of extinction. Not an identification guide, but a book of great value to not only those that study shells but those who have an interest and concern about the future of the natural world.
