If you are familiar
with the very popular book "Mitridae Costellariide" by Robin and Martin
you pretty much know what this book is like. There is very little text,
just a brief introduction that is followed by a listing of the species
by genera with basic size, range and synonomy for each species. The
main part of the book is a very well done photographic depiction for
each of the species which serves as an identification guide for the
shells in this large and varied family. In some cases where specimens
were not available for photographs drawings after the original
descriptions are supplied. I think that you will find this be be a very
useful guide to these shells. The format of the book is a little
strange since it is wider than it is high. It makes it a little
inconvenient to shelve this book but that is only a minor gripe.
Specialists in these shells will undoubtedly have some well justified
complaints about the nomenclature used by the authors but it is still
very useful to have a photographic record of the shells, all in one
book, for comparison and identification use than it is to have nothing.
Names if they are incorrect can be changed later but the shells
themselves will not change. This is a used copy but can easily pass as new. |
