(Mollusca: Pulmonata: Sigmurethra)
Part I - family Eudondontidae
by Alan Solem
Part I 1976, Field Museum of Nat. Hist., Chicago, hardcover, no dust jacket, 508 pages with 208 figures, size 9½ by12½ inches (24cm. by 31.5 cm.)
This is a monumental work based on a large study of specimens and a review of 285 species-level taxa in 45 genera of these snails found in Polynesia, Micronesia, and Fiji. Most of these shells were previously unreported and 84% of the genera and 54% of the species in this study are described as new. Both volumes are illustrated with large-scale line drawings of the shells and their anatomy and there are also a few photos using a scanning electron microscope and there is an extensive discussion of each of the species. This book is quite rare today and we were fortunate to be able to obtain a copy. The book was previously owned and there is an inscription inside the front cover with the last owner's name. There is a repaired tear on the upper part of the spine and some shelf-wear on the edges of the covers.
