| Crustaceans & Mollusks Trawled off Suriname and French Guiana
M. Takeda & T. Okutani
1983, Japan Fishery Resource Research Center, blue cloth hardcover with title gold blind stamped cover and spine with plastic protective jacket as published, in English and Japanese, 354 pages, about 7¾ by 10¼ inches (18.5 by 26 cm), each species beautifully illustrated in color
This is a rare book and it is the only copy that I have ever been able to obtain. While it is the result of an exploratoty expedition to find crustaceans and mollusks as a food source, it is also a beautifully illustrated book with well written descriptions of the mollusks and the crustaceans found by this deep water survey. The section of the book covering the mollusks will be of greater interest to those of you reading this page. It consists of 166 pages and includes 35 cephalopods, 76 gastropods, and 32 bivlaves and includes 9 species newly described by Dr. Okutani. This book contains a notorious reputuation since it includes a picture and discussion of Voluta surinamensis (Okutani,1982). The locality data given when this species was initially discovered was "reversed" and this shell (actually from the Saya de Mala Bank in theIndian Ocean) was mislocated to the Caribbean Sea.. This book is in very good condition there is some wear and a few small tears on th eplastic jacket but apart from that it is as new. |
