Description
Corals of the World
author
Jen Veron
,
s
cientific editor & producer
Mary Stafford-Smith
2000, Australian Institute of Marine Science, Townsville, QLD, Australia. 3 volumes, stitched binding, laminated board covers in slip case, 1381 pages in total, page size is A4 about 21 by 29.5cm (about 8 by 11.75 inches) fully illustrated with color plates throughout.
Generally I try not to add books about anything except mollusks to my catalog. But when a long time friend and client asked me to help him find a book about corals I did some searching and came up with this book. I was so impressed with what I saw that I have decided to ad a few copies to my inventory and offer it to those of you who are looking for a truly great work about the corals, or who, like myself, know next to nothing about them and want a reliable guide book to help me learn about them. To say that these books are anything less than magnificent is to greatly understate the fact. The photography throughout the book is outstanding and the layout and the organization of the books is clear, easy to use and simply beautiful to look at. The corals are arranged by family and information about each family is given. We then get a closer look at the genera that make up each of these families and finally information and photographs of the species that make up each genus. The text is minimal but quite adequate since the pictures and distribution maps speak more for themselves than written words can do. We are presented with overall pictures of the living coral colonies and close ups of the individual organisms that make up the reef.
The authors are experts in their field and have a combined total of more than 50 years of study to the production of this set of books. Dr. Veron was at the date of publication the Chief Scientist at the Australian Institute of Marine Science and Dr. Stafford -Smith is an expert in the field of coral taxonomy. They have done a fantastic job. This is a used set but except for a few small scuff marks on the slip case it can easily pass as new.
