1993, University of Hawaii Press, hardcovers with printed dust-jacket, about 8¼ by 11½ inches (about 21 by 29.5cm), 644 pages, profusely illustrated with color photo plates on almost every page as well as maps and drawings through out
This 1993 printing is of the earlier 1986 printing done by the Australian Institute of Marine Science, and it is a superb reference work. Written to appeal to both the specialist scientific community and to amateur students of corals and marine life this book does a remarkable job of this task. The descriptive material and the photographs and drawings are of top quality and it provides descriptions and photos of almost 1000 coral species found off Australia and in the Indo-Pacific. The photos are of a large size and often are spread across more than two pages of the book. Generally the plates illustrate the corals with their polyps extended, withdrawn and also in highly detailed close ups. The author is an expert coral reef biologist with more than 25 years experience in this field when this book was published. |
