This is another book
published in
Italian that deserves a place in the libraries of collectors around the
world. There should be no language difficulties here since the text is
really pretty much limited to a brief discussion of each of
the
classes of mollusks that are illustrated. There are no color
illustrations in this book but all of the shells are
represented
with drawn figures in gray scale thatrender them with a high
degree of accuracy .
Usually
two views of each shell is given and the layout generally is 6 species
per page. Next to each species is a number that can be used to refer to
the species, the family to which it belongs, the name of the shell and
its author and date of description. Below that is a map of the
Mediterranean showing the area in which the shell is found and a
comment on its frequency of occurance. The CD which accompanies the
book is in MicroSoft Excel and is a copy
of the
classification information which is also contained in text
form
in the book. It may be useful to use as a quick index to the book but
it is really not an item of great significance so far as I
can
see. The lack of color illustration is something that does
limit
the books desirabiluty many of you, but it is a very inexpensive guide
that converys a lot of information and the age old question of "are you
better off with poor quality color illustrations or sharp drawings".
This book definitely answers that issue.
