This is one of the most amazing shell books of all times and it was a phenomenal reference guide through out the many years that it remained in print. For many collectors it was the standard reference work and the first book to consult for a shell identification. While the book has now been surpassed in scope and coverage by the 2008 "Encyclopedia of Marine Gastropods" this is still a very popular and very useful title. It is an amazing reference work and it contains many shells not found in the "Encyclopedia" which has only gastropods in it. This book is still very much in demand .This is a copy that is in used condition and it has a book- plate inside the front cover autographed and inscribed to the previous owner and autographed by the authors designating it as copy #479 of the first 500 copies. The front hinge is torn and has been repaired and the book has a slightly musty odor from a long time in storage. I am sure that this will dissipate in time The book's jacket is slightly worn at the edges and is slightly torn at the lower edge of the spine. We've added a clear plastic cover to the jacket to protect it from further ware. The body of the book is almost as new. Included with this copy is an errata sheet dated 1982 and another errata sheet that was published by the authors in "Of Sea & Shore" magazine
