A Photographic Guide to Land Snails of China
by Wu Min Zhu
ISBN 978-7-5624-9040-1, published in 2015 by Chongqing University Press, paper covers with folded flaps, about 4½ by 7¼ inches or 11.5 by 18. cm., 226 pages with sharp color photos of about 300 shells some in on site live pictures and others as cabinet specimens. Index only in Chinese but mollusks are identified in standard scientific notation.
This book may well be the greatest bargain that you'll find in our inventory. To find a beautiful sharply photographed and printed book like this for less than $20.00 is something that I never thought could happen. There is no index in English so that users of this book will have to do a lot of page turning, but in doing so you are likely to come across many more beautiful molluscs that you can not find elsewhere. I wish that I could show you some of the great pictures from inside this book, but in order to do so I'd have to break the binding to get the book to lay flat. Trust me, the photos are great. This is the same book that you'll find on one of the big internet book sellers lists at $81.83. Unfortunately this is because of the two tier pricing system found for many things in China. There is one price in China and one price for foreigners. We buy our books in China and at he Chinese price.
The book is in Simplified (Mandarin) Chinese and that is
going to be an obstacle to these books becoming general reference works in the
west. Although I have a built in, in- house translator here in the form of my
wife, Juying, I find that I can scan in the text from the books and run them
through an online translation program and get a fairly accurate translation of
the text. Of course being familiar with the terms one is used to seeing in
other books helps us get back on track when the translation program takes off
on a track all its own.
This book and the other shell books from China as well as
being excellent quality works are also very low in price. They could not be
produced in the USA or anywhere else and sold for the prices that carry. I hope that this and the other books from
China that we are offering become somewhat well received. If the sales are even
modestly successful we intend to bring in many other books from China and from
Taiwan that we can offer you.
